Global Breakthrough-The Mutha City
Global Breakthrough is a phenomenon all over the world that sees clubs, artists and promoters coming together to produce events on a rather grand scale.
A Global Breakthrough spectacular is currently going down at venues all around Cape Town with really impressive line-up's that include some of the biggest names in electronic music. Check out the e-book here.
Most of it is, shall we say, aimed at a European mainstream crowd (read pitched up BPM), however there are some real highlights, including Ame on Wednesday (in an aquarium!) and German minimal electro genius Steve Bug (Poker Flat recordings/Dessous) on Friday (in the lions den at the old Zoo!!!)
I still don't know if I can know that Steve Bug is playing in SA and not go.

Diary of a Photog: Malawi
Spent most of last week in Malawi, for News of the World.
There is no language to describe the contradictions that exist there.
One of the most beautiful places in the world is also one of the poorest.
The people of rural Malawi live out their days in a constant quest to survive, punctuated by hunger and chronic disease and yet are some of the warmest and most generous people I've ever encountered. As I was leaving a tiny village called Lipunga, near the Zambian border, an elder pulled me aside, and with his hand on my chest answered the questions I couldn't ask, all with one succinct sentence: "Today is not the day I die, so today I will live."
I have to give a big up to my driver/translator/right-hand man Peter; thunderstorms, flash floods, crazy dirt roads, flat-out in a Toyota Corrolla 4x4 conversion, WRC is for pooftahs!!
Kids Fishing in the Road and Peter knee-deep just before crossing a flooded bridge!

More Edutainment:
O'Brien, Carrey and Weinberg on quantum physics:
Personally I think that in d-wave/d-wave junctions, the low-energy quasiparticle dissipation resulting from nodal quasiparticles and ZES is suppressed due to a quasiparticle-tunneling blockade effect in an isotropic s-wave superconductor.

Radiohead album in August?
Radiohead's latest album could be set for release in August - according to online retailer Amazon.
The band are currently working on their seventh studio album, the follow up to 2003 release Hail To The Thief, and Amazon claim the release date will be August 6.
But there has been no official word from the Oxford band and the retail website states that they will release the album through EMI - the record label that the unsigned band have parted from.

Monkeys and Killers dominate Brits
Arctic Monkeys and The Killers took most of the glory at this year's Brit Awards winning two gongs apiece.
Arctic Monkeys
The Monkeys won Best Album for Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and Best British Group, while Las Vegas rockers The Killers capped off a great year scooping awards for Best International Group and Best International Album.
Just as she predicted, Lily Allen walked home empty handed, with the award for Best British Female going to good friend Amy Winehouse.
The Fratellis and James Morisson were the pick of the newcomers picking up an award each, while Take That's Patience was voted as Best British Single. The boys did by far the longest speech of the night but there was no room for a mention to rehab housed Robbie Williams.
Other winners included Orson, Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake and Muse while Outstanding Contribution winners Oasis closed the Earl's Court ceremony with a storming set kicked off by Cigarettes And Alcohol.

Music Genome Project
On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.
The result: Pandora
Genius!!
Type in the name of an artist and Pandora will assemble a playlist of streaming audio that is representative of the genre, down to fine detail.
The intuitive software interface allows you to lead Pandora in the right direction.
After an initial trial you will be asked to create an account which is only available to users in the U.S (unless you just fill in a U.S zip code!)
Check it out!

And Now, for no Reason in Particular:
Three great songs inspired by Love lost:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Maps
Placebo: Follow he Cops Back Home
Radiohead: Talk Show Host
That's enough sentimentality for one day.

Vintage Crumpet!
As a result of my Gramophone Awards boycott, I ended up watching 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'.
Being made in 1961, I thought the film may have lost it's relevance, I was, however, pleasantly surprised to discover that it is actually about two people who drink..... a lot (often before breakfast), make fools of themselves in public, deface public property, steal from novelty shops, whore around and fall in love!!.......Brilliant!
Pity,
I was born too late, she was born too soon......
Audrey Hepburn could've been my Holly Golightly everyday.

Suki-Lala
Turkey????
Spotted this pic of the Mixmaster in the latest Zoo mag.
What the fuck is he doing at a camel wrestling tournament in Turkey?
The poor attempt at using a fake 'tache and roseary as a disguise didn't fool me.
Something is afoot.
If you spot Mixmaster Mike anywhere else please let me know, photographic evidence would be helpful, maybe we can organise an intervention and put a stop to the deception.
Where were you bastards then?
One of my all-time favourites from "Not the Nine O'clock News"........
